Safety Programs

Night-Time Security Program

The DNBIA has organized a Night-Time security program, funded by a wide-range of downtown businesses and the City of Nanaimo. The program enables professional security staff to circulate throughout Downtown Nanaimo during night-time hours to protect downtown properties. While paid security staff provide door-check and alarm-response services to member businesses, they also provide security for every business in the downtown area, merely by their presence. Night-Time Security patrollers respond to every observed security challenge, and this program has made downtown Nanaimo a safer place - 24/7.  For information on joining the nightime security program call the DNBIA office at 250-754-8141or Footprints Security at 250-753-6944.

Graffiti Removal Program

Has your business or property been vandalized with graffiti?  If you are a member of the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association, we're here to help!  When vandals strike, give us a call or send us an email and we'll have a Graffiti Removal Expert stop by your business, assess the damage and offer a quote to remove the graffiti.  When we've received the quote, the DNBIA will look at paying for half the cost!  The DNBIA - We're here to help your business and our Downtown prosper.

Security Fan-out

Like every commercial district or shopping mall in the country, organized bands of criminals periodically try to take advantage of the merchants of downtown Nanaimo. Whether it is counterfeiters passing phony $50 bills, or teams of shop-lifters running a scam, no community is entirely safe from criminal activity. In coordination with the RCMP, the Downtown Nanaimo BIA issues alerts to downtown businesses to be aware when criminal activity may be in process.

Bar Watch

As part of the Safer Nanaimo initiative, the RCMP, the City of Nanaimo, and the DNBIA has initiated the Bar Watch program to ensure that bar patrons and bar operators enjoy safe operations. The basic premise of the Bar Watch program is simple—every bar in the program keeps the same rules. Get 86’d from one bar—you’re banned from all of the Bar Watch members.

The key to making the system work is the Treoscope system—a technology that temporarily records information from each patron's ID. Through the Treoscope, bar owners know that every patron in their building is of-age, and that they haven’t been banned by another Bar Watch member. The next day, the Treoscope system forgets everything and starts over.
